Dungeness
“The ‘ness is simultaneously a desolate dystopian land and a place of awe-inspiring beauty.”
Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It sits between the sea and the nuclear power station, the atmosphere is eery, suspiciously calm, but full of contrast, as if something was about to happen at a place where everything is still, invisibly eroding by the pass of time as the salty air slowly eats away the abandoned boats and fishing nets.
When visiting this mystical place you find nature lovers attracted by the RSPB Observatory; film-aficionados peeping through the windows of Prospect Cottage, once home of the late film-maker Derek Jarman; city dwellers strolling along the pebbly beach before heading to the fish shack for a butty; and, the last of the fishermen trying to catch the daily mackerel.
